United States Constitution – Article 1 – Section 1

Section 1.

All legislative powers herein granted shall be vested in a Congress of the United States, which shall consist of a Senate and House of Representatives.

Several years ago I quoted this provision of the US Constitution incorrectly. Let’s see if you can identify the error. I quoted is as follows:

Memorial Day

Today is Memorial Day, or as it used to be called, Decoration Day. This is a day to remember our fallen dead, a day to visit the grave sites of our heroes past. 

I heard an old veteran speak many years ago.  He fought in the pacific theatre of WWII.  There is a war memorial on one of the islands with an inscription that reads:

We gave our today’s so you could have your tomorrows.

  He observed that those who fell there were happy to give their lives that others might live.  Then he asked an important question;

What are you doing with your tomorrows?

 Very good question. What are each and every one of us doing to preserve that liberty that was purchased for us at such a high price?  This liberty was purchased by those who “more than life, their country loved.”

Lincoln said the following in his Gettysburg Address:

—that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion—that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain—that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom—and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.

May each of us remember these great men who gave us so much.

John Kennedy said the following:

Ask not what your country can do for you, but ask what you can do for your country.

Unfortunately many Americans have done little since that time but look for nothing but gifts from the government.

Let freedom ring and ring again.
