Anyone who has homeschooled for long comes to realize that this lifestyle can be controversial. People are always questioning your sanity. Sometimes we question our own sanity. Homeschooling can be tremendously successful and the converse is also true.
A family in Alabama with a dozen children seems to have nailed the formula. They make learning fun. It must be working. They have sent six of their children off to college before age twelve.

Jay Leno demonstrates the effectiveness of American History education. He asks some very simple questions and these people have no clue.
One question he asks was: “What did Paul Revere say when he found out that the British were comming?” The gal could not answer the question.
Most people today have no clue why America is free. They don’t understand what makes freedom possible or how to keep it. Our future is not pretty.

“Politics is the art of looking for trouble, finding it, misdiagnosing it, and then misapplying the wrong remedies.”
“If a politician found he had cannibals among his constituents, he would promise them missionaries for dinner.”
“Surrender is essentially an operation by means of which we set out explaining instead of acting.”
“He who does not bellow the truth when he knows the truth makes himself the accomplice of liars and forgers.”
THE UNBEARABLE LIGHTNESS OF BEING [AN EVANGELICAL "LEADER"]
The caption, as some may notice, is a play on the title of an existentialist/postmodern novel by Czech novelist Milan Kundera.

From an existentialist point of view, we have only one life to live. Consequently, our lives and decisions are ultimately insignificant. This is the “lightness” of being. On the other hand, we want our lives to have transcendent significance, which makes the “lightness” of being “unbearable”. Read more
Don’t let schooling interfere with your education.
This certainly implies that there is a difference between schooling and education. Most of us learned not to touch a hot stove without going to school. The natural consequences of touching a hot stove were sufficient to discourage this activity.
Oliver DeMille, author of A Thomas Jefferson Education said the following (I am paraphrasing here):
No teacher is an educator. The only person that can educate anyone is the student themselves. They need great teachers and there are great teachers but no education takes place until the student decides that they want to learn and is willing to put forth the effort required to achieve that goal.
A John Madsen stated:
A lecture is that which passes from the notes of the teacher to the notes of the student without passing through the mind of either.
A lecture setting requires that student listen and write down what is said. Later they are tested on how well they remember what they were told. A mentorial based education system requires that the students read the material so they are prepared for a discussion. They argue and debate, offer insites, etc. They really learn the material. This process forces the book to pass through the student rather than just getting through the book.
